Don’t forget your partner when you update on social media
Do you frequently post on social media? Assuming you are partnered, do you mention your significant other when sharing on platforms like Facebook or Twitter?
If the answer is no, you might want to change that.
Here’s why – a new study in Plos One suggests that people in relationships who neglect to mention their romantic partner run the risk of making their mate feel left out.
The research, conducted by investigators from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Kansas, sought to assess how social media use can affect a partner’s perceptions of the relationship.
“Prior research has shown that self-disclosure positively affects offline relationships,” said Dr. Juwon Lee, a post-doctoral researcher in Carnegie Mellon's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “We wanted to explore whether that would remain the case in an online context, where users can share detailed information with large audiences — a phenomenon that typically wouldn't be possible in person.”
The paper, which contains a collection of five studies related to romantic partners and social media behavior, is one of the first to examine how online disclosures can positively or negatively impact a romantic partnership.
In a nutshell, their findings suggest that if you want your significant other to be feel secure (aka feel happy) it’s important to mention them – in some way – in at least half of your posts.
“For many of us, sharing our feelings and daily experiences on social media is one of the main ways we stay in contact with friends and family,” Lee said in a press release.
“Because of this cultural shift from face-to-face or phone conversations, it's important that we understand how our usage of these technologies affect our personal relationships. Additionally, other research has found that people benefit from sharing information about themselves, which might be why people engage in it so much. But it's important to know the full picture and understand that sometimes sharing can be bad for you.”
So, there you have it, folks. Science is kind of telling us that part of keeping a mate happy means mentioning them on social media. Do you do this?
