What's up with butt pimples?
Do you ever get zits on your butt? You know, those annoying red pimples that look bright red? When in the presence of another person, do they embarrass you?
If the answer is yes, you wouldn’t be alone. Lots of people, particularly men, struggle with spots on their derriere. But are these tiny bumps acne or is something else going on?
According to leading experts, it’s likely not acne at all. Instead, you may be dealing with folliculitis. What’s that you say – you’ve never heard of this before?
Here is what Dr. Ron Smith, a board-certified plastic surgeon told MV:
“Folliculitis skin condition that is caused by an infection from bacteria, fungus, or yeast. In many cases, it causes irritation of hair follicles and even blocks them. When it flares up, it will look like a bumpy, red rash and may cause itching. They can even cause pain.”
Folliculitis is generally caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria; something that is usually harmless and lives on everyone’s skin. However, when your dermal layer is damp, it can cause this bacteria to grow and infect hair follicles. Remember, staph bacteria and hair follicles can be found all over the body so folliculitis doesn't just happen on your butt.
That said, the problem is your arse is super vulnerable to irritation from fabrics. Combined with sweat, this warm, damp, dark, environment makes it perfect petri dish for staph to grow.
If you want to get rid of your butt pimples, Smith suggests getting a topical antibiotic cream and using some type of antibacterial wash. You can also apply benzoyl peroxide [the same types of products used to treat acne breakouts].
When you are done showering, make sure you thoroughly dry off. If possible, opt for breathable fabrics like cotton. This will help you to avoid getting sweat trapped on your skin and causing problems.
If you are concerned about your bumps, it's probably a good idea to talk to your physician.
