Can a Donut Help Improve Your Memory?

A donut may help your recall abilities

Do you love donuts? Are you looking for an excuse to eat more of them without feeling guilty? Need something to whip out as proof that an occasional donut can be a good thing?

If the answer yes, then stay with me because I’ve got news for you. According to Gary Wenk, a Professor of Psychology at the Ohio State University, scarfing down a crawler may benefit your brain.

No kidding – that chocolate sprinkle you scarf down with a side of coffee are things your brain needs (occasionally) in order to function optimally.

I’m not making this up. You can read the professor’s thoughts on the topic at Psychology Today. The core of his argument is that as the day progresses, your body depletes certain brain chemicals – like adenosine -that are responsible for memory retrieval.

As a remedy to this problem, a morning donut and a cup of Joe act to supercharge these brain chemicals. In turn, you’ll have an easier time accessing memories.

Before you get too excited, it is only fair to point out that there’s plenty of research to suggest donuts are horrible things to eat. For example, the folks over a Delish offer eight specific reasons why these kinds of treats should never enter your mouth.

That said, the old saying that moderation in all things comes to mind. Should you shovel down half a dozen crullers before clocking into work? Probably not.

But, according to what Wenk is suggesting, there may be times when reaching for a vanilla glazed donut makes sense. Examples include having a super late-night (and not a lot of sleep) or needing an extra kick.

You may be wondering if there is such a thing as a healthy donut? The answer is yes. Just do a quick Google search on the topic, and you’ll find pages of results.

But honestly, if you are going to eat a Boston Cream or something jelly-filled, why not just go for the gold and enjoy what you really want? Just don’t make it an everyday thing.

Well, there you have it, folks – a super flimsy excuse to eat donuts. Enjoy!
