Social Media Trends
According to a research study involving nearly 10,000 college age students, Instagram is the most narcissistic social media platform on the planet.
The results were released by LendEdu, a New Jersey based company that helps students compare and obtain student loans.
Here’s some highlights from their findings:
Nearly 64 per cent of millennials believe Instagram is the most narcissistic social media platform. It received more votes as the most vain social media app than Facebook (10 per cent), Snapchat (15 per cent), and Twitter (11 per cent) combined.
“Young people will not beat around the bush as to why they use social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter,” said a spokesperson from LendEDU, who conducted the survey.
“They use these platforms to boast of their daily tidings, carefully craft their public image, and feed their egos in this interconnected digital age.”
The survey also asked participants: “Do you make an intentional effort to like people's Instagram posts who like yours?”
In response, 67 per cent of millennials answered “yes, it's unspoken Instagram code”, while 33 per cent said “no”.
As part of this study, 9,477 millennials were asked: “Do you know someone who deletes Facebook or Instagram posts if they don't get enough likes?”
In total, 78 per cent indicated they themselves or a person they know deleted posts that didn’t get enough likes.
A mere 22 per cent of millennials did not know someone who had done this.
“The results of this question prove that the overwhelming majority of social media users do not post pictures to genuinely share their experiences with others,” according to a spokesman for the student refinancing company.
Previous research has found that people who post selfies on social media are more apt to possess something called the “dark triad” of personality traits.
Experts found traditionally successful manipulators who are classified as being part of the dark triad – people with narcissistic, psychopathic or Machiavellian tendencies – don't send very compelling online messages and seem to rely on looks and body language in person to convey charm.
