National Monuments to be reviewed
According to a report in the Salt Lake Tribune, Donald Trump will order a review of national monument designations – which would include Stonewall Inn – as part of a wide look at a century-old law that allows presidents to set aside federal lands without congressional approval.
Per the Tribune:
“On Wednesday, Trump will sign an executive order to demand that the Interior Department secretary examine all national monument designations in the past 21 years to discern whether their size and scope are within the law's intent, a move that tracks clearly with concerns of members of Utah's federal delegation about the use of the unilateral presidential power in designating monuments.”
As reported in Pink News:
“The Stonewall Riots saw the local LGBT community rise up after repeated police raids of the gay bar. Some of the first Pride marches began on the anniversary of the riots in 1970, and in many countries Prides are still often known as ‘Christopher Street Day’ Parades in honor of the pub’s location.”
However, a question mark will now hangs over its status, as President Trump is expected to order a review of all the monuments designated by his predecessor.
LGBTQ community members will be watching events closely. It was only last year that a conservative blogger and supporter of Mr. Trump called for the dismantling of Stonewall Inn.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Trump will this week sign an executive order Wednesday to ask the Interior Department to review all national monument designations in the past 21 years.
According to the paper the review will “discern whether [the monuments] are within the law’s intent”.
Update 4/26/17: Stonewall exempted from national monument review
Trump’s order is not expected to change monument designations immediately.
The review was reportedly prompted by President Obama’s designation of the Bears Ears monument, but will stretch across all such monuments.
