Upset her favorite show got nixed
Recently, ABC Television announced that it would be cancelling Last Man Standing starring actor Tim Allen as well as other shows, like The Real O’Neals.
Apparently, some people didn’t like this and attributed Allen's show's nixing for political reasons.
Debbie Massey, the Executive Director of the Executive Director of the Madison Rivergate Chamber of Commerce (Nashville Chamber of Commerce) took to social media last week in response to news the series had been cut and shared the following:
“I can’t believe that I am supposed to be OK with shows like (‘Grey’s Anatomy’) or ‘Nashville’ or any other show that promotes LGBT blah blah blah.., Whatever!” Massey also linked to a Breitbart.com article about the cancellation of “the program. “Cramming same sex making out into our Homes! But I can’t watch MY FAVORITE show! ‘Last Man Standing’! Talk about discrimination!!”
The comments drew swift criticism from members of the community and people on social media.
On Monday, Massey resigned her position as head of the chamber.
In a May 15 statement posted to the Madison Rivergate Chamber website, chairman Ron Smith addressed the resignation and went into damage control:
“I have known Debbie for more than 5 years and she is one of the hardest working, most dedicated individuals I have known. I respect Debbie’s wish to resign her position and allow the Madison Rivergate Chamber to move forward from this unfortunate event.
I know that I, along with my fellow board members want to continue the mission of the chamber and be a welcoming institution, open to and willing to assist all persons and businesses in our community.”
According to an article in The Tennessean, the chamber will soon begin diversity training. They also will start to focus on social media training and “plans to take several steps to reach out to LGBT businesses and encourage diversity.” This will include joining Tennessee Thrives, described as “an anti-discrimination initiative launched by businesses across the state.”
On a related note, in a conference call held yesterday to announce ABC’s fall schedule, ABC’s entertainment president Channing Dungey stated “Last Man Standing” was canceled for “business and scheduling reasons,” and that a big part of her job is to “make the tough calls and cancel shows we would love to have on.”
“[‘Last Man Standing’] was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings,” Dungey said. “Once we made the decision to not continue with comedies on Friday, that was where we landed.”
Many on the right were upset that the show was cancelled and attributed its being yanked because of Tim Allen being a self-identified republican and Trump supporter.
Allen himself got into hot water in early 2017 after he told Jimmy Kimmel about attending Trump’s inaugural “You gotta be real careful around here. You get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody else believes. This is like ’30s Germany.”
