Falcon And The Winter Soldier: What We Know So Far

Falcon And The Winter Soldier

Is the MCU getting ready to give us the superhero meets buddy-cop show of our dreams?

In its phase four announcement, the Marvel Cinematic Universe revealed that it would be expanding tremendously. With new and diverse movies on the horizon, the acquisition of 21st Century Fox leading to the additions of the Fantastic 4 & X-Men, and a host of Disney+ shows on the horizon, MCU fans will soon have A LOT of content to consume. But what’s the first property to come to us? The Falcon & The Winder Soldier. To get you ready for that upcoming show, we have provided all the info that’s out right now about the program.

The Synopsis

Back at the start of February, Disney released a press release about Disney+/MCU’s upcoming series. Below, we’ve included the section about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities- and their patience – in Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The all-new series is directed by Kari Skogland; Malcom Spellman is the head writer.”

The Super Bowl Ad

At this year’s Super Bowl, Disney and Marvel Studios released a 30-second ad to spotlight the three Disney+ shows in the works. While the second half of the video shows footage from WandaVision and a quick look at Loki, the first half is all about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

The Release Date

During an earnings call with investors, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger (who recently stepped down from that position in order to act as chairman) announced that Falcon & The Winter Soldier will drop in August 2020. No specific day on that month has been shared yet, unfortunately.

The Stars

Again, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan will be the show’s leads. The film will focus on them. Throughout the many MCU movies, we’ve seen these two work together alongside their best friend Captain America. But now that Steve Rogers has left being a superhero behind, it looks like Stan and Mackie have to learn to get along without him. But will they be friends or just work colleagues? According to Mackie, more of the latter.

“So, with The Falcon vs. Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan and I, we really get to develop that relationship between the two of us, and you get to see it unfold,” he told Rotten Tomatoes TV. “You know, 'cause we were never really friends. And we still aren't really friends.”

And on a quick side note, Emily VanCamp will be returning to her role as Sharon Carter/Agent 23. (We wonder if Marvel will acknowledge the fact that Carter’s kind-of-boyfriend left her for her aunt).

The Villains

But who’s bringing the two together? Who are the villains fighting against them? It appears there will one definite villain and one antagonistic character.

For the full out villain, we will see the return of Daniel Brühl as Barron Zemo. In Captain America: Civil War, we saw Zemo split up the Avengers singlehandedly. While this villain isn’t super powered, he is incredibly smart and tactical. That will make him a tough enemy for Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

But that’s not all. There’s also a new Captain America in town. It appears that the American government won’t approve of the Falcon taking on the Captain American name and outfit. Because of this, a man named John Walker or U.S. Agent (played by Wyatt Russell) will be pushed as the next Captain America.
