LA Pride replaced with protest march

In case you haven’t heard, there is a big change this year in the way LA celebrates Pride. Specifically, there isn’t going to be the traditional “Pride Parade”. Instead, it’s being replaced by a protest march.

As reported by WEHO and Queerty, this year’s events have taken a decidedly political turn.

Here’s what WEHO shared with its readers:

“While the 2016 event was branded as a “music festival” due to the large number of musical acts performing, this year’s will not have that branding.

Meanwhile, the annual pride parade has been canceled, ceding to the nationwide LGBT Resist March that is scheduled in many U.S. cities for Sunday, June 11, the day the Los Angeles pride parade would normally occur.

Similar to the giant Women’s March that took place in dozens of cities across America on Jan. 21, the Resist March in Los Angeles will step off from Hollywood and Highland, since there is a subway station there allowing participants to arrive by mass transit.

The march will follow a 3.1 mile path down La Brea Avenue, turning onto Santa Monica Boulevard and ending at San Vicente Boulevard, the entrance to the Pride festival.”

The folks at Queerty have posted the following on their blog:

“The annual pride parade has been sidelined altogether to make way for the nationwide LGBT Resist march, scheduled in several U.S. cities for Sunday, June 11th, the day LA Pride usually takes place.

Bound to be much like the vast Women’s March that swept many American cities on January 21st, LA’s Resist march will kick off at Hollywood and Highland and follow a 3.1 mile path to La Brea Avenue, where it will then turn onto Santa Monica Boulevard and end at San Vicente at the entrance of the Pride festival.”

Apparently, the Pride Festival itself will is still on, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11 in West Hollywood Park.

The annual Pride parade is expected to return in 2018. To learn more about the protest march being organized on Facebook, visit this link.
