Young straight guys are very open to new sexual experiences per published study.
Straight young men are highly interested in mixed gay threesomes, according to a new line of research published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
Behavioral investigators from the University of Wisconsin and University of University of New Brunswick, assessed the attitudes and experiences of young, heterosexual participants regarding multi-person sex with someone of the same sex.
Here’s a breakdown in plain-speak:
Name of study:
Heterosexual Young Adults’ Interest, Attitudes, and Experiences Related to Mixed-Gender, Multi-Person Sex.
Demographics of participants
The participants of were recruited from an “eastern, midsize Canadian university” per the published study. There was a total of 274 people who volunteered.

The entire survey took approximately 45 min to complete.
Participants were compensated for their participation either by receiving extra credit in their Introductory Psychology course or by being entered into a draw with a 1 in 25 chance to win a $50 Visa gift card.
Here’s a quick demographic breakdown:
- 272 total participants
- Only heterosexuals were recruited
- Age range span: 18-24
- 202 women
- 72 men
- Race, ethnicity and national origin were not recorded
What the research sought to understand
At its core, this study explored how young, straight, heterosexual felt about having a mixed gender threesome (MGT).
The study also examined experiences with threesomes, including MGT sexual experiences.
How the research was conducted
All participants were given an assessment called the Mixed Gender Threesomes Scale (MGTS); a 25-cent term for an assessment that examines attitudes about having a mixed gender experience.
An example question from MGTS is as follows:
If presented with the opportunity, how interested would you be in engaging in a threesome if it involved: two males and a female?
Each item was rated on a 7-point scale ranging from “not open at all” (1) to “very open” (7).

What the research found
The findings of this study, which we admit would be difficult to generalize to the wider population, were remarkable. What follows is a quick breakdown.
- 78% of young men said they would be open to experiencing a MGT.
- 24% of young men had already experienced a MGT in some form.
- Compared to the women, the men reported significantly more positive attitudes about MGT. They were also more likely to report a MGT experience.
- Both men and women preferred to know the “third party” as opposed to a stranger.
Conclusions
Here is a statement from the study, as printed in the Archives of Sexual Behavior:
“Our findings [suggest] that young people are not only accepting of MGTs but that many are interested in engaging in an MGT, coupled with the fact that multi-person sex is likely to be higher risk sexual behavior, suggest that sexual health educators need to incorporate a discussion of multi-person sex into their programs.”
Quick Thoughts
Obviously, all research studies have limitations. This one is no different. The sample size was relatively small.
Additionally, the study itself acknowledges that some guys may be have projected a voyeuristic fantasy onto the assessment.
One thing this study does seem to confirm and is backed up by related research and it’s this: Young, self-identifying heterosexual guys are open to new sexual experiences, including same sex experiences.
