Channing Tatum is an American actor who got his start as a male stripper, model, and dancer. His breakthrough role occurred in 2006 when he played the part of Tyler Gage in the film Step Up.
As his popularity skyrocketed, he took on more prominent roles in movies like The Vow, Stop-Loss, Dear John, and 21 Jump Street. More recent films include Dog (2022) and Bullet Train.
Perhaps his best-known part was in the 2012 film Magic Mike where he played the role of Adam. The movie is loosely based on his experiences as a male stripper during his youth while in Florida using the stage name Chan Crawford.
To say the film was popular is an understatement. In fact, audiences liked it so much that a sequel was created called Magic Mike XXL. Even today, the popularity of this movie lives on in a Las Vegas show called Magic Mike Live.
Apparently, Channing Tatum is involved with a third offering of the film called Magic Mike’s Last Dance which comes out in 2023.
Channing Tatum Relationships
The most widely known relationship Channing Tatum has had was his marriage to Step Up co-star Jenna Dewan. The duo had dated for some time since filming in 2006. By 2008, Tatum had proposed.
In July 2009, the couple exchanged vows in Malibu, California, and were officially wed. Not long after, news came that Jenna was pregnant and in May of 2013, their daughter Emily was born.
For several years, the couple appeared on the cover of numerous magazines, such as People and In Touch. To look at them from a distance, you couldn’t be blamed for thinking they were the picture-perfect couple.
That’s why their announcement in April 2018 was so shocking to the world: The couple was splitting up. A public statement was released by the pair that said the following:
“We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now.”
Immediately, gossip and rumors started swirling by some fans that the reason for the split was because Channing Tatum was secretly gay. To be fair, he isn’t the only celebrity who has been subject to such talk. It happened to Kenny Chesney back in 2005 when his wife, Renée Zellweger, announced their divorce.
But back to Channing Tatum.
Around six months after news of their separation broke, the actor was spotted by the press with vocalist Jessie J. In March 2019, the two officially came out as a couple, with Mr. Tatum greeting his girlfriend in a public venue on her birthday.
Dewan revealed in her 2019 book, Gracefully You: Finding Beauty and Balance in Everyday Life (see Amazon) that she was a bit surprised by this new relationship.
Here’s what she wrote: “I was learning things about my ex most people wouldn’t have to face — and over the internet, as it was happening. There I was, on a plane, alone, finding out about his new relationship. I felt blindsided. Choosing grace as I learned everything about my personal situation and the rest of the world was really difficult.”
Dewan’s comments about learning “things” about her ex “most people wouldn’t have to face” added a bit to the Channing Tatum queer rumors. That may sound shallow, but you are here to find out if Channing Tatum is gay and so that’s why we’re sharing.
Channing Tatum Gay Rumors
To be clear, we are not saying Channing Tatum is gay, queer, bi, or straight. He’s never come directly out and stated his sexual orientation. Instead, we’re sharing why some people think he may be gay.
Here’s a quick rundown:
Gay-ish Movies
Several of the films Channing Tatum has appeared in have a heavy gay vibe. The primary one that comes to mind is Magic Mike from 2012 and The Eagle from 2011. And of course, there was Foxcatcher, released in 2015.
The Huffington Post put a piece in 2015 that literally is entitled: Channing Tatum’s 5 gayest movie roles. We’re sharing this because it gives you an idea of what serves as the fuel behind the queer rumors.
Man-Sex Comments
A major reason why some suggest Channing Tatum may be bi, gay, or queer relates to comments he has made in the past about other men. An example can be found in his remarks about actor George Clooney. In a 2012 interview published in the UK’s Sun and carried by Huff Po, Tatum revealed that he’d developed a “Man Crush” on Clooney and went on to say, “I’d have sex with him”.
The remarks were made in conjunction with the rollout of the movie, White House Down.
Tatum also had several heads turning about comments he made about actor Jamie Bell who appeared with him in The Eagle. In an interview by Vulture, Tatum revealed having had a bromance with Bell for several years and that the two were sleeping together. That said, upon closer inspection of the interview, it is obvious his responses were made in the spirit of comedy.
In response to an interview question asked by Vulture, he shared that he and the actor (Jamie Bell) have been having a bromance for several years and that they were sleeping together. A quick read of the entire interview appearing in Vulture however makes it fairly clear the comments were made in the spirit of fun.
Again, his joking around about having a bromance with another man doesn’t mean he’s bi or gay. But it is just one more thing that makes some wonder about the types of people he is attracted to.
Man Crush Comments
Channing Tatum appeared in an ET Interview in 2014 whereby he revealed a straight-up man crush on actor Jude Law. Comments are viewable on YouTube.
In 2016, during an interview with Extra, Channing Tatum shared that he was fond of fellow actor Kevin Nash. He literally said, “Nash is my type” in the interview. This interview is also available for viewing on YouTube.
Reddit Comments
Back in 2015, we wrote about Channing Tatum’s super gay Reddit comments. Keep in mind these comments were made in advance of the release of Magic Mike XXL.
Here are a few examples. The first are comments he made about a fellow actor (and out gay man) Matt Bomer:
“No matter if you're a man, woman, cat, hamster, you will get lost in matt bomer's eyes.”
And here is what he wrote about actor Danny DeVito in the same Reddit commentary:
“I'd (F… Danny Devito, as I was saying earlier it could be fun. I'd marry Ray Romano, because I think he has a pretty solid perspective on marriage. I don't know who would be the male or female, you figure it out.”
Some have suggested that Channing Tatum purposely engages in gay baiting, a popular term used to describe the dynamic where an actor hints at (possibly) being queer but never comes right out and says it. The reason for doing so is to whip up buzz and speculation about the person or the movie they will appear in.
Burnt Penis
Did you know Channing Tatum burnt his manhood? It’s true, he did and his revelation that it happened became another reason those gay rumors started.
In 2010, Tatum shared in a Details Magazine interview that his penis was scorched while filming The Eagle. Keep in mind this movie was made in an extremely cold weather environment. To keep him warm, hot water was poured on him. You can read all about this by doing a simple Google search.
We’re mentioning this because The Eagle had a heavy queer vibe. The content of the film, when combined with the real-life penis accident, makes for the stuff of gossip and urban legend.
That’s the thing with gay rumors. It doesn’t take much to get them going, particularly on a celebrity. You can be sure much of it is based on wishful thinking.
Supportive of LGBTQ Community
Make no mistake about it. Channing Tatum is supportive of the LGBTQ community. In 2015, he appeared in the LA Pride Parade. Many of his movies hold a queer-friendly vibe.
Like many actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto, Tatum likely knows it is in his best interest to be an ally of the LGBTQ community.
Is Channing Tatum Gay?
It is not our place to state the sexual orientation of Channing Tatum or any actor. Instead, it is on the celebrity himself to reveal this information, should they choose to do so.
Part of the reason a celebrity may be tagged as “gay” is because they don’t identify themselves in a public way. Some would argue this is a smart approach in today’s modern world, allowing for wider appeal to a mass audience.
Additionally, not identifying may help the actor obtain roles and not be type-cast. It just depends on the situation.
Channing Tatum Poll
Just for fun, we’ve included a totally non-scientific poll that allows you to vote. Consider this a tool of entertainment and not based on anything factual.
Channing Tatum Bi, Gay, or Queer?
Does it really matter if Channing Tatum is bi, straight or gay? When looking at the big picture, absolutely not. But interest in this handsome star and his sexual orientation speaks to a strong desire to know more about him.
We’ll continue to watch Channing Tatum’s movies in the future and marvel at his ability to take on a wide range of roles.
